Hey, we just released our second game, Sanctuary 17. It's an homage to the old Intellivision game Night Stalker that extends the gameplay quite a bit (we hope). In a little bit I'm going to post some of the source code for the game to our web site -- as you'll see, we have a simple lighting system using the blending modes mentioned in the Flixel FAQ, but I'm not sure if anyone has shown an actual implementation of it.

Hope you like it! It's playable at http://twofoldsecret.com/games/sanctuary-17/

The lighting effects are great, even if they feel a little chunky (which is to be expected). I'm scared of the dark and the roving green lights.... bzzzt.

I really, really like this game. How'd you do the lighting stuff?

Great work!

I'm going to write up this in more detail on our blog, but the basic gist is that you have a FlxSprite that's the darkness, then you draw different sprites onto it that represent each lighting effect. Finally, you add the darkness above everything else in the scene and change its blending mode to 'multiply'. You have to reset the darkness and repaint it on every update cycle, which is a bit CPU intensive. I had to carefully manage how many lights were visible onscreen at once.

I know this approach was written up in one FAQ or another but I can't find it right now.

That makes sense. Good concept that was really executed well. It felt a little bit like Berzerk meets the Survival Horror genre.
